FAIRPORT HARBOR LIGHTHOUSE, one of two lighthouses in this community, is known as "the lighthouse that shone for a hundred years." It was once a beacon of hope for escaped slaves as they made their way to the last stop on the Underground Railroad. Although the preservation of the lighthouse has been an uphill battle and it has gone through numerous renovations over the years, it's historic significance to this lakefront community is important and needs to be preserved. Opened in 1945, the LIGHTHOUSE MARINE MUSEUM offers visitors a look into the past. We will view historic pictures of the lighthouse, read logs of guided vessels and walk through the area where runaway slaves sought refuge.
FAIRPORT HARBOR is a lovely coastal community perched on the bluffs above the mouth of the Grand River. This quaint harbor town offers charming, locally-owned shops for those who want to look for a one-of-a-kind treasure or for those who just want to browse. We will have approximately one hour to explore.
Lunch will be served on a grand-scale today at the very grand STEELE MANSION. It was built in 1867 and has been described at the "grandest home in Painesville." The French Second Empire home features a third-floor ballroom, 8 marble fireplaces, windows imported from France, 3 bathrooms and ornate walnut doors, stairs and trim. Our group will have a guided tour of this grand dame after lunch is served. Today we will dine on Chicken Marsala, Roasted Red Skin Potatoes, Salad, Rolls and Butter, Dessert and Beverage. During lunch you will hear about the 150-year story of the mansions history and view a collection of photographs.
We will end our day with a stop at the MAPLE RIDGE GARDEN CENTER. Here we will find interesting ideas on landscape designs and lovely, healthy plants at a great value. Be on the lookout for that special something for your spring planting and decorating projects.
