WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 15, 2018: Following a 7:30 AM Breakfast Buffet at Lorain County Community College, 1005 Abbe Road, Elyria, we will depart by luxury motorcoach at 8:15 AM. Lunch today is on your own at a Bob Evans Restaurant in Birch Run, Michigan. In the late afternoon we will stop at the TAWAS POINT LIGHTHOUSE (1876) in East Tawas, Michigan. The lighthouse is a destination for birdwatchers and spectacular views of sunrises. Our accommodations for two nights will be at the fabulous THUNDER BAY RESORT, in Hillman, Michigan. This evening our group will enjoy a PASTA BUFFET at the resort and an evening CAMPFIRE with yummy S'MORES.
THURSDAY, AUGUST 16, 2018: After breakfast, we will depart for the 40 MILE POINT LIGHTHOUSE, which was built in 1896 and is a two-story duplex with a tower incorporated into the center of the side wall. The 12-foot square tower stands 52 feet high and is capped by an octagonal cast-iron lantern room. The mirror-image apartments on each side provided complete privacy for the keeper and his assistant. Work is now being done to preserve the entire site. One apartment is occupied by a full-time caretaker and the other apartment has become a nautical museum. The GREAT LAKES LORE MARITIME MUSEUM specializes in memories. Learn about the generations of men and women who risked their lives to sail and make their living on the water. Here you will find enshrined and remembered their uniforms, personal possessions, navigational and other maritime tools. Lunch will be at THE FRESH PALATE in Alpena, Michigan. After lunch, we will browse through the BESSER MUSEUM OF NORTHEAST MICHIGAN which offers an enriching experience through art, history and science. Later in the afternoon we will arrive at the THUNDER BAY RESORT. Take some time to explore the grounds of the resort. The highlight of our day will be the ELK VIEW CARRIAGE RIDE, GOURMET DINNER & WINE TASTING at the Resort. Our horse-drawn carriage ride will take us through the wooded areas of the resort, over a wooden bridge that crosses the Thunder Bay River and into the Elk Preserve. Your guide will fill the ride with interesting stories, facts and history of Northern Michigan and the elk. We will ride into the preserve where hopefully we will get a close-up look at the Rocky Mountain Elk and Whitetails. Dinner will be at the charming ELK ANTLER LOG CABIN filled with antiques and a massive split stone fireplace. We will dine on a hearty gourmet five-course meal prepared on antique wood cookstoves. We will also enjoy samples of six locally produced wines from the Stoney Acres Winery in Alpena. We will return by carriage to the resort.
FRIDAY, AUGUST 17, 2018: After breakfast we will depart Thunder Bay Resort and make a stop at the GREAT LAKES MARITIME HERITAGE CENTER. Here you will be able to explore shipwrecks in real time via live video feeds and discover the Great Lakes history through innovative exhibits. There will also be time for a GLASS BOTTOM BOAT TOUR. Lunch will be at JOHN LAU SALOON, which is Alpena's oldest saloon, dating back to the city's lumbering days. Dinner will be on your own at a fast food restaurant around the Toledo area and our arrival time back to Lorain County Community College is scheduled for 9:00 PM.
