In 1906 Edward and Florence Libby, the founders of the TOLEDO MUSEUM OF ART, visited Egypt and purchased a pair of Egyptian mummies as part of a collection of artifacts. These mummies are rarely put on view due to conservation issues and ethical considerations surrounding the display of human bodies. This special exhibition will trace the history of Egyptian mummies, from their lives and the burial rituals to the Egyptomania craze that followed in later years after their discoveries. Egyptian artworks from the museum and loans from other institutions will help to put the mummies in their historical context. Our group will have a tour of the exhibit along with a program.
All will enjoy a box lunch from the Museum Café. Please choose one option from the following: Smoke Peppercorn Turkey Club or Italian Trio or Chopped Fruit Salad.
There will be free time to further explore other parts of the museum at your leisure. Be sure to stop by the gift shop.
The TOLEDO MUSEUM OF ART houses one of the finest international glass collections in their GLASS PAVILION. The pavilion itself is a work of art in glass. It is an impressive 15 feet tall and offers 76,000 square feet of room. It is an elegant building and considered a structural marvel. It showcases more than 5,000 pieces of glass works from ancient to contemporary times and also features glassmaking facilities. Our group will have a glassmaking demonstration this afternoon.
